When I first stumbled upon The Eminence in Shadow , I wasn’t sure what to expect. Another power fantasy anime? Sure. But let me tell you—this one surprised me. It’s self-aware, over-the-top, and ridiculously entertaining in the best ways possible. If you’re a fan of action, comedy, and a sprinkle of absurdity, this anime is a must-watch.
Plot Twist
The story follows Cid Kagenou, an ordinary high schooler… or so it seems. In reality, Cid’s dream is to become the ultimate “shadow ruler”—you know, the mastermind who pulls strings from behind the scenes. He’s spent his entire life training to embody this role, but in a completely unexpected twist, his fantasies become reality when he’s reincarnated into a magical world.
Cid accidentally forms a secret organization, Shadow Garden, to battle a cult he thinks he made up. Joke’s on him, though—the cult is real. What follows is a mix of epic battles, hilarious misunderstandings, and Cid being totally oblivious to the chaos he’s causing.
Character Development (The Eminence In Shadow)
- Cid Is the Ultimate Troll Protagonist
Unlike most power fantasy protagonists, Cid doesn’t want to be the hero or the villain. He’s just living out his over-the-top fantasies, and in a way is fun to watch. Whether he’s monologuing about the importance of shadows or casually defeating enemies without even realising it, Cid brings a unique charm to the genre. - It Parodies the Genre
If you’re tired of cookie-cutter power fantasy anime, this one’s for you. The Eminence in Shadow doesn’t take itself too seriously. It pokes fun at the tropes we’ve all seen a million times—like overpowered protagonists, overly dramatic villains, and secret organisations. Yet, it somehow delivers on all of those elements in a genuinely entertaining way. - The Side Characters Shine
Shadow Garden, Cid’s unintentionally badass organisation, is full of incredible characters. Alpha, Beta, Delta, and the rest of the crew are loyal, powerful, and far more aware of the plot than Cid himself. Each member has their own personality and moments to shine, making them more than just background characters. - The Action Is Top-Tier
The fight scenes are gorgeous. Whether it’s magic, swordplay, or Cid casually obliterating his enemies, the animation delivers. Studio Nexus put in the work to make every battle visually stunning.
Like any anime, it’s not without flaws. The humor, while hilarious to me, might not land for everyone—it’s a bit absurd and relies heavily on misunderstandings. Also, the pacing can feel a little rushed at times, especially when the story jumps between different arcs and characters.
But honestly, these are minor complaints in the grand scheme of things.
What Makes It Special?
What I love most about The Eminence in Shadow is how self-aware it is. It knows it’s ridiculous, and it leans into that. Cid’s delusional antics, the overpowered battles, the exaggerated drama—it’s all so unapologetically over-the-top that you can’t help but enjoy it.
At the same time, the anime offers genuine moments of intrigue and excitement. The world-building is solid, the stakes are real (even if Cid doesn’t realise it), and the characters are genuinely likeable. It’s the perfect balance of parody and earnest storytelling. It has great animation and amazing fight scenes.
My Personal Rating
I’d give The Eminence in Shadow a solid 8.5/10. It’s not for everyone, but if you’re someone who loves a good mix of comedy, action, and ridiculousness, this anime will hook you.
It’s the kind of show that keeps you coming back for more, not because it’s deep or groundbreaking, but because it’s just so much fun. So, if you’re looking for something unique in the power fantasy genre, give it a shot.
Trust me, you’ll be quoting Cid’s dramatic lines in no time.
